Little Tokyo is the cultural and social hub for Southern California’s Japanese American community. In addition to
the 15 structures that make up the Little Tokyo Historic District, established in 1886, there is the more recent
Japanese Village Plaza. Dominated by a traditional Japanese lookout tower and delicate Japanese-style landscaping,
this commercial walkway is a soothing change from the clamor of the city. Tourists and locals, alike, scour the novel
shops for unusual gifts and enjoy the seemingly infinite variety of dishes at numerous Japanese restaurants.
The District is also a place where history intersects with public art and performance. In addition to supporting the
Japanese-American National Museum, this enduring community hosts festivals year round festivals and a full
calendar of other special events.
