The California Science Center began as the Exposition Building in 1909 and has been growing and evolving ever
since. In 1951, the institution became the California Museum of Science and Industry. Then, in 1987, the Museum
underwent another transformation and name change. In keeping with its new mission as a state-of-the-art science
education facility, it is now known as the California Science Center.
The $130 million "reinvention" could not have been more successful. Today’s California Science Center is abuzz
with wide-eyed children excited by such hands-on, interactive attractions such as: Tess, the 50-foot animatronic
woman who illustrates how the body’s organs work; a Space Docking Simulator, a virtual hovercraft in zero-gravity;
and a 43-foot high-wire bicycle ride that demonstrates the principle of gravity and counterweights. Also larger than
life is the new IMAX theater with a 7-story high, 90 feet wide screen and the latest in surround sound and 3D
technology.
