Pershing Square, or "La Plaza Abaja" as it was known in 1866, is part of the city’s original Spanish land grant and its
first formal public area. Approximately 25 or so years later, it was renamed "Central Park". Then, in 1918, its official
designation changed again to Pershing Square," in honor WWI General John Pershing.
Always a popular destination for people from all walks of life, Pershing Square was completely renovated in 1994 by
noted architect Ricardo Legorreta. New landscaping and public artworks, including a 120-foot high purple campanile
and a playful wave fountain, create a soothing, open-air respite in the midst of one downtown’s busiest areas.
