The Japanese-American National Museum, founded in 1985 and opened in 1992, is expressly dedicated to sharing
the multifaceted contributions of Japanese-Americans through their highly-refined material culture. The institution
also offers the public an opportunity to experience the meaning and value of ethnicity within the larger context of our
nations extraordinary diversity by celebrating Japanese heritage through public exhibitions and educational programs.
The first Japanese-American National Museum was housed in former Buddhist temple, built in 1925. Then, in 1999,
a new 30,000 square foot museum opened across from this original site. Future construction plans include a Pavilion
that will expand the Museum exhibition space by over 100,000 square feet.
