MOCA is one museum in two locations (the Museum of Contemporary Art and the Geffen Contemporary) and is
the only institution in Los Angeles devoted exclusively to art created from 1940 to the present. The Grand Avenue
building, designed by renowned Japanese architect Arata Isozaki, is visually stunning. Clad in red Indian sandstone,
two separate pavilions, separated by a raised court, echo traditional as well as post-modern forms. MOCAOs
collection is particularly strong in works by Cy Twombly, Jasper Johns, and Mark Rothko.
While the Grand Avenue building was under construction, the museum exhibited in the "Temporary
Contemporary," later renamed the Geffen Contemporary, located on Central Avenue. This warehouse-like space
now houses a permanent collection and is the ideal showcase for some of the best modern and post-modern
art around.
