The California African-American Museum has been celebrating the contributions of African-Americans to society
since its charter in 1977 by the State of California. The current building was designed by African American
architects Jack Haywood and Vincent Proby and opened to the public during the 1984 Olympic Games.
Although small in size, the Museum is large and eclectic in scope. Recent exhibits have included a biographical
retrospective of the jazz genius Duke Ellington including his instruments and hand-written compositions, an
exhibit exploring hair in African art and culture, and an historical overview of African-Americans journey to the
West in the 19th century. Always fresh, always vibrant, the California African-American Museum offers a full
calendar of lectures, concerts and special events.
