Founded in 1871 by Isaias W. Hellman, a successful merchant and real estate speculator, Farmers and Merchants Bank was the first
incorporated bank in Los Angeles. This Classical Revival building, with its imposing two-story facade reminiscent of a Roman Temple,
stands as the architectural embodiment of stability and prosperity.
Built in the grand "temple of finance" tradition so popular during the early part of the century, the entrance is flanked by stately Corinthian
columns topped by a triangular pediment. Although the building ceased to be used as a bank in the late 1980s, its impressive grandeur
both inside and out endures.
